Co-Manufacturer (Co-Man)

A manufacturing facility that produces your product according to your specifications and formulas but may also produce other brands' products in the same facility. You own the recipe, branding, and intellectual property, while the co-man handles the actual production, equipment, and day-to-day operations. This is different from having a manufacturer make a generic product and slapping your label on it.

Why it matters

Co-manufacturing is how most small CPG brands actually get made, it lets you launch a product without buying expensive equipment or hiring production staff. Understanding what a co-man does and doesn't do affects everything from your costs to your timeline to what control you have over your product.

What Co-Manufacturer (Co-Man) is not

Co-manufacturing is not the same as white-labeling or private labeling, where you buy an already-formulated product and rebrand it. With a co-man, you're bringing your own formula or design; they're just running the machinery and handling logistics.
