Bill of Materials (BOM)

A complete, itemized list of every raw material, component, and ingredient needed to manufacture one unit of your product. It includes quantities, part numbers, suppliers, and unit costs for each item. The BOM is your blueprint for production—it tells you exactly what to buy and how much each unit costs to make.

Why it matters

A clear BOM lets you calculate your actual production costs accurately, which is essential for pricing and profitability. When you scale production or work with manufacturers, suppliers, and investors, they'll all need to see your BOM to understand your product and give you quotes or feedback.

What Bill of Materials (BOM) is not

A BOM is not a shopping list for one-time purchases or a recipe card. It's a formal, detailed document tied to a specific product version—when your product changes, your BOM changes too.
